Synopsis
In Oceania is a dystopian totalitarian state where the Party controls every aspect of life, including thought. Winston Smith, a member of the Outer Party in Oceania, rebels against the omnipresent Party and its enigmatic leader, Big Brother, who controls every aspect of life. Winston's acts of defiance, including writing in a diary and having a forbidden love affair with Julia, lead to his capture by the Thought Police. He is subjected to brutal psychological manipulation and reconditioning at the Ministry of Love, ultimately leading to his forced acceptance of the Party's ideology. The novel explores themes of totalitarianism, propaganda, and the suppression of individuality.
